Non-value adding activities consume resources and thus we can say they are not economically sustainable. Sustainability addresses how processes and operations be efficient, last longer and have less impact on the environment and society. Sustainable processes reduce ecological impacts, integrate stakeholders needs and look forward to eliminating wasteful depletion of resources. Given the ability to reduce waste and to increase productivity, sustainable lean initiatives should be considered in the improvement pipeline of all organisations. There is a clear opportunity to solve environmental challenges with lean tools to impact positively sustainability outcomes.
